Influenza (or flu) is a highly contagious viral infection and is one of the most severe illnesses of the winter season. Every year in the United States, on average 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu; more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and; about 36,000 people die from flu. Influenza can make people of any age ill. Although most people and children are ill with influenza for only a few days, some have a much more serious illness and may need to be hospitalized. Influenza may also lead to pneumonia and/or death. If you do happen to come down with the flu, follow these tips for a speedy recovery.

The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.
