Medical Libraries

General Services

Each library is equipped with personal computers and printers. Internet access, UP TO DATE, eMEDICINE, INSPIRE, STAT REF and Ovid medical and nursing research databases are also available. Additional services are provided, including:

  • Bibliographic instruction and library orientation.
  • Online searching and journal and textbook investigation for requested topics. Searches may be done by the user or by the library staff upon request.
  • Library staff have access to DOCLINE to order articles on interlibrary loan.
  • Audio/visual equipment borrowing, including TV/VCRs, DVDs, slide projectors, caramate projectors, cassette recorders, easels and flipcharts.

Printed materials

General and specialized medical, allied health and nursing textbooks – for in-library use only – are cataloged. Hospital and health care administration directories and related documents, such as federal and state government publications, medical dictionaries, indexes and numerous resource catalogs are available. Non-reference books may be checked out to authorized personnel with library privileges. Various newspapers are also available.

Research, clinical medical/nursing and professional journals are maintained in the collection for approximately ten years. Selected journals have been archived back to the middle 1900s and are stored in the School of Nursing. Upon request, the library staff will retrieve and make copies, or scan and e-mail articles from these collections. Journals are for inlibrary use only and are not available for general circulation outside the library; photocopying services are available and must comply with copyright laws.

After hours access

After hours access to the hospital libraries is available via a secure door code (availble from library staff) or by calling Security at ext. 5186 (home Hospital) or 6192 (St. Elizabeth Medical Center).

After hours access to the School of Nursing Library will vary according to the school’s academic calendar. Please call the library for current posted hours.

Online services

In addition to general online services, the School of Nursing Library offers computer software and Computer Assisted Instructional (CAI) programs for use in the school’s computer labs and Skills Lab only. Current St. Elizabeth students have first priority for computer time, software and CAIs.

At the Home Hospital and St. Elizabeth Medical Center libraries, additional services are provided. They include:

  • Online searching, and journal and textbook investigation for requested topics. Searches may be done by the user or by the library staff upon request.
  • Interlibrary loan.

Audio/visual materials

An audio/visual database of holdings available in the School of Nursing library and throughout the system is maintained. A two-day circulation policy for checkout is available for authorized personnel. Most A/V materials are in DVD and VHS formats, with some slides, games and medical models.
